Resident Spotlight: Dr. Larry And Rev. Paulette Magnuson

May 20, 2020

When you’ve lived a rich, adventurous life, it can be a difficult decision to make the move to a senior living community – however, a move doesn’t mean giving up your lifestyle, social opportunities and lifelong experiences! In fact, it often enriches them while making it even better than before! At Hidden Springs of McKinney, this is exactly what residents can experience each day! From their perfect location to their array of amenities, services and more, it’s no wonder why residents can’t wait to move and experience all that life has to offer at Hidden Springs!

“Knowing people’s backgrounds, passions and past truly make life at Hidden Springs even better,” says Doris Lea, Executive Director of Hidden Springs of McKinney. “The more we get to know someone and the more we understand the rationale behind why they chose our community truly gives insight into how our lifestyle makes a difference. I love learning what has impacted a resident’s decision to move, why they have and what ‘clicked’ for them, sealing their desire to choose our community. This not only helps me bond with the residents, but it also makes my job fulfilling and gives my days so much meaning.”

While choosing a community may be difficult for some, for our future residents it seems that the stars simply align, signs begin to appear and it just feels right. For Larry and Paulette Magnuson, that’s exactly what happened. We recently sat down with Paulette to hear more about how they decided on Hidden Springs and why it just felt right to them!

Dr. Larry and Rev. Paulette Magnuson will be moving from Georgetown, Texas to McKinney and will become residents of Hidden Springs on May 28, 2020. Larry is a retired Family Practice/Occupational Medicine physician, and Paulette is a retired teacher and a retired – but still active – Episcopal Priest.

Paulette: We have been married for forty years, and have spent 15 of those living abroad courtesy of the U.S. Department of State. This includes places like Frankfurt, Germany; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (East Africa); Moscow, Russia; and Washington, D.C.

Upon retirement in Georgetown in 1998, they were delighted to be close to most of their kids and grandkids, who were scattered from Dallas to Oklahoma. Twenty-two years later, the realization that they were not getting any younger, the yearning to rid themselves of some of the irksome responsibilities of daily living, and the heartfelt desire to be much closer to family meant it was time for another move.

Paulette: Having children, grandchildren and a brand new great-grandchild in the North Dallas area helped make the decision to move to McKinney.

The idea of moving to a retirement community was something the Magnuson’s had been considering for some time when Paulette heard about Hidden Springs from a member of one of her congregations.

Paulette: I checked it out online, read through all the brochures, and before long we were sitting down in McKinney, in the middle of a construction zone, talking with Doris and wearing hard hats!

They were immediately impressed with the size of the planned community.

Paulette: It was not a sprawling, cavernous place that felt institutional, nor was it too small. Even in the midst of the construction mess, it was easy to imagine it as a cozy community where new friends could easily be made. The restaurant-style dining plan was impressive, as were the plans for active lifestyle classes and senior learning opportunities. As a physician, Larry’s main criteria was to live where the opportunity for continuing care was easily available. The luxury level of the buildings, apartments and grounds was very evident and appealing, even though it was in process.

After taking an exhaustive tour with Doris and asking many questions, they picked out an apartment and signed on the dotted line – they never looked at any other facilities.

Paulette: We had planned to look around and do more research, but felt it wasn’t necessary. The clincher was when we realized that St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church was directly across the street. We knew then that Hidden Springs was meant to be our new home.

Larry is completely retired from doctoring and is an accomplished musician. He plays stand-up bass, trumpet, concertina, and in the last three years has taken up the piano. He hopes there will be other musicians at Hidden Springs who want to get together.

Paulette is a passionate weaver and will be bringing her floor loom and lots of yarn. She is also crazy about Mahjong and will be looking for players. Although retired from full-time parish ministry, she plans to continue her work serving the church.

“We are so excited to welcome Paulette and Larry, as well as their dog Banjo to Hidden Springs,” says Doris. “We have even asked her to serve as a chaplain for Hidden Springs and are pleased to share that she plans to do so once she becomes licensed in the Diocese of Dallas!”
