When most people think of traveling to see the fall colors, they don’t often think of greater McKinney, Texas as a destination. That’s a real shame, says Doris Lea, Executive Director of Hidden Springs of McKinney, a luxury retirement community that is now open in McKinney, Texas.
“Texas, especially northern Texas, is filled with a variety of hardwoods that burst in displays of riotous color in the fall,” she says. “For those who are willing to take a drive, there are so many state parks with lakes, hiking trails and other fun outdoor activities that are perfect for families … and are also COVID-19 friendly.”
Due to the ongoing nature of the coronavirus pandemic, fall – like spring and summer – will be looking, sounding and feeling a lot different this year. However, there are still plenty of opportunities for residents of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex – and beyond – to enjoy a taste of autumn during the months of October and November.
We’ve compiled some of the biggest events and locations you’ll definitely want to hit this fall. As of this writing, everything listed is scheduled and still moving forward. However, be sure to check rules, regulations and schedules before you head out anywhere on your fall adventure.
Fall Foliage
What says “fall” more than an afternoon enjoying the glorious colors present in the autumn leaves? Whether you choose to hike, bike or drive through the wooded areas, there are still plenty of locations for McKinneans to get their fall on.
Cedar Hill State Park is just a short drive away from the DFW metroplex and is a fantastic area to bike, hike and camp (yes, campsites are open). It’s a great place to spend the day or a weekend and enjoy the beauty of nature while enjoying the mild fall weather. Outside of the metro area, you’ll find Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve in Southlake, Texas – almost 758 acres of Cross Timbers habitat with more than 20 miles of hiking trails available. And just 45 minutes away from DFW is Lake Mineral Wells State Park, which contains a 640-acre lake, scores of pecan, oak, Texas ash and walnut trees, 13 miles of trails as well as Penitentiary Hollow, one of the few natural rock climbing areas in North Texas. No list would be complete without mentioning the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Not only are the fall colors breathtaking, but you can also experience the ever-popular Autumn at the Arboretum. Walk through the nationally-acclaimed Pumpkin Village featuring four 20-foot-tall decorated pumpkin houses and creative displays fashioned from more than 90,000 pumpkins, gourds and squash. This favorite fall festival opens on September 19 and runs through November 1.
Pumpkin Patches & Fall Fun
Pumpkins and hayrides and corn mazes – oh my! Family friendly fun is to be had throughout the region (along with some great celebrations and delicious food, too).
At Storybook Ranch, kids of all ages can partake in fun activities such as the hay maze, pony and horse rides, a bounce house and obstacle course, petting zoo, Field Day Games and a wagon ride. The Ranch is in business from September 26 through November 1 and is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. until dark.
Yesterland Farm, located in Canton, Texas, is THE destination for fall fun, pumpkin picking, rock climbing and so much more. With 30+ activities and attractions, from Apple Cannons to Zombies, plus a 3-acre corn maze– here’s something for everyone in the family. Don’t miss Spooktacular Nights (held on Fridays and Saturdays from October 2nd through the 31st), which will get you in the Halloween mood (in a family-friendly way), of course. The farm proper is open from September 19 through November 8.
If a farmer’s market is more your thing than an actual farm, don’t miss the Dallas Farmers Market. Each weekend, local farmers and vendors set up under The Shed to sell their fresh goods. The indoor shed is a food hall with over 20 restaurants open regular hours throughout the week.
For the first time in its 134-year history, the State Fair of Texas will be presenting a one-of-a-kind drive-thru experience. The Big Tex Fair Food Drive-Thru will celebrate all things Texan – giving you the opportunity to get your annual photo with Big Tex and a taste of the Fair while supporting the State Fair of Texas’s nonprofit mission. The Drive-Thru will take place:
- Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 4, 2020
- Friday, October 9 through Monday, October 12, 2020 (excluding Saturday, October 10, due to the AT&T Red River Showdown football game)
- Thursday, October 15 through Sunday, October 18, 2020
The Turtle Creek Arts Festival will take place October 17-18 at Reverchon Park, a 43-acre community park in Dallas. This event will feature up to 125 painters, photographers, sculptors, leather and metalwork, glass blowers, jewelers, and crafters! The festival will also offer artist demonstrations, live acoustic music, a children’s play area, plus festival foods and beverages with healthy alternatives.
