We’ve talked a lot about how wonderful Hidden Springs is – the location, the amenities, the services, the construction and so on and so forth. And that’s all very well and good (and we’re very proud of it, so of course we want to show it off). But what really makes Hidden Springs unique – what’s putting it on the map and how it’s redefining senior living – is the people who have chosen to call us home.
“Our Discovery Club is an amazing group of talented, unique, intelligent and interesting individuals, and I just love that they’re helping shape what Hidden Springs is and what it will become,” says Doris Lea, Executive Director of Hidden Springs of McKinney. “Not only that, but I love getting to know each and every one of them. They’ve all become like family to me and I’m thrilled that I and Hidden Springs will be playing a part in writing this next, best chapter of their lives.”
We sat down with two members of the Discovery Club – Peggy and Bill Minor – to hear about what they’re looking forward to and why they’ve chosen Hidden Springs for their retirement years. Bill just retired from his role as a business owner and sales representative and Peggy still works as an international travel advisor.
Peggy: We lived in Cincinnati for most of our adult life until my daughter, who was the head at an ad agency in Chicago, was hired by Frito Lay to be their national Director of Marketing. She’s married and has our 11-year-old grandson, Will, and we thought, “why would we stay in Cincinnati when we could move to Dallas, watch Will play golf and grow up, and be near family that we can see every day?” It really was a no-brainer.
Bill: We looked at it like a new adventure. We’ve always done a lot of traveling and tried to do things that were off the beaten path. We stay in Europe for 4 to 5 weeks at a time, living in the country and spending a lot of time interacting with the locals. That’s really our sort of thing – moving into a place and really absorbing everything about it.
P: It really just seemed like the thing to do, but I couldn’t find anyplace in Texas where we wanted to move. After months of research, I finally came across Hidden Springs and thought, “That’s exactly the type of community I’m looking for.”
B: We didn’t want a place that felt regimented or where we were marching to the beat of someone else’s drum. That’s not really our bag. Fortunately, Hidden Springs was different – what we expected retirement should be like.
P: We really had a certain expectation of retirement and Hidden Springs met it perfectly. The flexibility is amazing, as is the potential. It is really cool to be able to get in on the ground floor and have so much flexibility and customization available for your lifestyle. We also get to make a lot of personal touches to the community at large, too. We brought a ton of books with us for the community library, and we also brought crates of my mother’s paintings with us that Doris is going to use to decorate the community.
B: We really like the other Discovery Club members and the fact that the community has attracted a good crowd of people. Everyone is very different and varied. There are engineers, doctors, lawyers, artists … they’re all people you can find something in common with and with whom you have shared interests. Which is great, because you don’t want to move to a place where you can’t make friends or carry on a conversation with the other people. Hidden Springs feels more like a community in that way, and that’s wonderful.
P: We also have to give praise to Doris. She’s been so open to suggestions and has definitely promoted the idea that “if you want something a certain way, just ask!” For example, if we want a certain type of meal or have suggestions for the menu, we can just talk to the chef and explain what we would like. Even if we want salmon every night – he’ll do it! That’s just fabulous to me. You have a heck of a lot of control.
B: There’s a lot of freedom and a lot of choice.
P: One thing I’m really excited about is my yoga teacher. She’s a fabulous yoga teacher in Cincinnati, and she teaches rehab yoga and has a YouTube channel. I talked to Doris about purchasing a subscription to her channel and she seemed really open to that. I like that Doris’ default is, “That’s great! Let’s do that!” instead of saying, “No, we can’t do that.” I give her 100% credit for that. The options really are endless, and everyone has the chance to put their two cents in.
B: Culturally, this is a really good fit for us. And not just us! The lifestyle and the whole atmosphere is flexible enough to work for everyone. I think that’s a tribute to the management, because they’ve really hit on what makes people happy. And when people are happy, the whole community just gets raised to another level. That’s a really fun thing to be a part of.
P: We absolutely can’t wait to move in. We love our apartment, we love all the amenities and we just love Doris, too. We’re just so excited about everything that’s in store for us.
