There’s no place like home, but when something happens that requires us to remain there, we can often feel the urge to explore and enjoy the great outdoors. Although it’s currently difficult to enjoy all there is to offer, it doesn’t mean that you can’t remain happy, healthy and connected while at home.
“Many seniors thrive off of social connection, a focus on health and wellness, pursuing their passions,” says Doris Lea, Executive Director of Hidden Springs of McKinney. “It’s fortunate to know that many of these things can easily be continued at home if we simply adapt and find new ways to embrace the situation.”
To make staying happy, healthy and connected easier for local seniors, we’ve broken down some helpful tips and a sampling of ways to continue getting involved and being inspired from the comfort of your own home.
How to Stay Happy
Despite everything that’s currently going on, there is a multitude of ways to get happy and stay happy.
Be strategic in your news consumption. For example, if you are finding the news to be more depressing than helpful, turn it off. Stick to newspapers, check the news once a day to remain informed, or look up some good news! There are plenty of places to find news that will warm your heart, heal your spirit and make the good of the world known, such as Good News from Fox News.
Focus your energy on something you love. Do you love playing musical instruments? Do you paint or even read? Try to spend some time each day doing a couple of things you love and enjoy.
Learn something new. There are plenty of things to learn online. For example, if you aren’t an artist, yet have a set of watercolors laying around, watch tutorials to learn how to paint. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to do origami, give it a shot. You never know what skills may be hiding or what you’ll find that you truly enjoy and want to continue.
Staying Healthy at Home
Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you can’t remain healthy and well! Consider some of these tips to improve your health in the comfort of your own home.
Participate in exercise videos. It’s as simple as looking up fitness videos to enjoy on YouTube! Check out a tai-chi class, give yoga a try, consider kickboxing! The choices are endless.
Cook up some new recipes. If you didn’t previously cook often and ate out instead, now is the perfect chance to explore your inner chef! Bring out those old cookbooks, look up recipes online based on ingredients you have and take the time to sharpen your cooking skills and eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Go for some outdoor walks or gardening. Although it’s important to remain socially isolated, it doesn’t mean you can’t explore the great outdoors safely; simply try to stay away from people or remain on your own property. Pull some weeds, plant some flowers, go for a small walk, or exercise outside.
Get Connected
When spending so much time at home, it’s easy to feel isolated, disconnected and lonely. Fortunately, technology makes it possible for us to stay in touch with those we love. Try some of the following ways to get and stay connected!
Use video chat software. If you’re missing the grandkids or your other family members and friends, consider scheduling a time for a video chat. This can not only give you the feeling of face-to-face contact, but you can also feel more as if you’re there with them.
Host your clubs over Zoom. Some clubs can allow for meeting online. Instead of canceling book clubs or your weekly happy hour, host them with all your friends online on software such as Zoom! This allows you to see everyone at once and chat together.
Call friends and family often. Many times, we can tend to opt for a text to talk to loved ones, however, giving them a call can help you both feel more connected. Call certain friends at a designated time during the week, call your children to see how they are doing and use this opportunity to grow your bonds from afar.
Watch religious services. Many services are offered on television and some are even available online.
