Home Sweet Home: Make Hidden Springs Your Own

Sep 25, 2020

Perhaps the most fun part of moving to a new place is decorating it just the way you like it. This is particularly true when you choose to downsize and move to a senior living community, says Doris Lea, Executive Director of Hidden Springs of McKinney, a luxury retirement community that is now open in McKinney, TX.

“Downsizing really gives you a chance to purge the old and say yes to new decor and items that better reflect your current style moving forward,” she says. “Think of it as a chance to say out with the old, in with the new! It’s a great way to launch this next phase of your life. Plus, you’re able to get rid of all that spare stuff you’ve been meaning to go through for ages.”

Doris says that, while downsizing can be an emotional experience as you go through years of memories, it can also be very freeing. “Marie Kondo has opened a whole world to many people with the idea of letting go of things that don’t spark joy,” she says. “When you move into your new home, you definitely want to have things around you that bring you happiness – and not bring you down.”

As a brand-new community, Hidden Springs offers so many opportunities for personalization and joy-sparking. The community offers a wide variety of floor plans so you can choose the one that fits your lifestyle perfectly. The online floor plans also feature a Room Planner, which allows you to place furniture (digitally) and rearrange it to your liking. Not only is this fun, but it also helps you determine what floor plan works for you – and what items of furniture you may want to keep (or not).

“We’re all about options,” says Doris. “And our online Room Planner is just one more option so you can customize life the way you want it. Senior living has never looked so good, and senior living options have never been better.”

Tips for Making Your New Home Yours

If you’re moving to Hidden Springs from a family home (which we’re assuming you are), you’re more than likely moving from a large home into a much smaller footprint. Here are some tips to help you navigate the downsizing process and create a beautiful living space in your new place.

  1. Choose items you actually use.

There’s no way you’ll be able to bring all your furniture and belongings with you to your new home, so that means you’ll need to go through your possessions with a critical eye. A month or so before you get ready to move, take inventory of what you actually use during a normal day or other timeframe. This is a great chance to get rid of things that you only use once a year or occasionally, and ensures that everything you bring has “earned” its place.

  1. Make use of every inch of space.

Thanks to Amazon and IKEA and countless other online stores, seniors these days can find pieces that will allow them to maximize every square foot of their new apartment. Remember to look upwards as you’re decorating – wall shelves and cabinets are great ways to get things off the floor in an attractive way. Plus, it makes everything look homier!

  1. Pick items that double as storage.

Ottomans, sofas, beds, corner cabinets … all of these can double as storage space, leaving you more room in your closet and keeping bulky items out of sight. A bed with storage underneath can house extra pillows, blankets and sheets, while an ottoman can double as storage or a coffee table (or both).

  1. Use mirrors to open up the space.

It’s an age-old trick for instantly making any room look larger. Place mirrors in appropriate spots (such as over the fireplace, or above a couch) where they will help reflect light and also make the room feel more airy.

  1. Go bold.

Surprisingly, bold colors and patterns work very well in small spaces. Pops of color can really transform a room, so if you’re anxious about buying a blue velvet couch, consider fun pillows or brightly colored throws to add a splash of color to more neutral decorations.

  1. Let your light shine.

Multiple light sources will help make a room look bigger and cheerier. Instead of a single light source in the middle of the room, add floor lamps and table lamps to open the space up. Remember that height can make the room look bigger, so choose tall, thin lamps with smaller shades so they don’t overwhelm the space.

  1. Show off your curves.

Senior living apartments, although gorgeous, are also square. Round, curved furniture and accessories can help soften the angles and warm your home up. Round mirrors, rugs, pillows and the like can add texture and softness to clean lines.

  1. Don’t forget to make it feel like home.

The most important step of all – make sure it truly feels like home to you by putting up pictures of your family, friends and happy memories. We all have those items that truly speak to us, whether it’s a chair or a photo or a small knick-knack. While your new home is brand-new and ready for adventures, don’t forget that your past is still very much a part of your everyday life, and it deserves to be celebrated, too.
